With the efforts of the Azerbaijani Women’s Support Centre in collaboration with the Federation of Canadian Azerbaijani Associations, we were successful enough to launch the Azerbaijani language school in the city of Toronto in September of 2006. Azerbaijani Language School of Toronto District School Board at C H Best School in the city of Toronto is the first official Azerbaijani language course in North America. Right now, there are 35 registered students. The Federation of Canadian Azerbaijani Associations supported this project of Azerbaijani Women’s Support Centre to recruit the students and pay the necessary fees for registration of students. According to the regulations of Toronto District School Board at least 25 students should be registered to open the school. Luckily, many families supported this project and registered their children at the school.   According to the research, the children who know their mother tongue perform better academically at schools. Therefore, the Canadian government supports the diasporas in this project. The intention behind the starting the Azerbaijani language course in Canada was to support the parents in this problem, and also to educate children in Azerbaijani traditions, language, literature, music and history. The children within the short period of time performed excellently and contributed a lot to the programs of the Federation. One of them was during the eve of the Day of Solidarity of Azerbaijanis on December 31, 2007. Their paintings and hand works amazed the community members and outsiders.   The Federation of Canadian Azerbaijani Associations and Azerbaijani Women’s Support Centre also invited the ACAO members from the South Azerbaijan, which claim to be the oldest and largest organization of the South Azerbaijanis in Canada to send their children to the school on the day of their demonstration in front of the Ontario Parliament building to protest against the oppression by...
